Exploring Lucca, Italy

Walled Promenade surrounding Lucca, ItalyWhat makes Lucca unique is that it is entirely surrounded by a well-preserved fortified wall complete with ramparts which have been transformed into a beautiful four kilometer tranquil park and pedestrian promenade.  Not only is it an ideal location for views across the city, but it’s also a terrific place for a morning jog, an afternoon stroll or a relaxing bicycle ride.

Once inside the wall, we explored the maze of narrow cobblestone streets, visited a number of impressive churches and lively piazzas.

We ended up at the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro which used to be the site of a Roman Amphitheatre.  It’s now ringed with a variety of interesting shops, cafes and restaurants.

We stopped for lunch; a delicious Lucchesi pasta dish topped with a boars meat ragu along with a luscious red Lucchesi wine.

We strolled down Via Fillungo, a major pedestrian shopping street in the historic center. You’ll find all kinds of unique shops from fashion to decor items.  If you’re a foodie, there are plenty of stores to buy tasty deli products and wine.

We buy a variety of olives and cheeses as well as some delicious wine from the Sardini family and take the 20 minute train ride back to Viareggio to have the wine on our balcony while watching the setting sun off the Tuscan coastline.  It just doesn’t get any better….

Tomorrow we’ll be heading to the vibrant Roman city of 2.9 million people.  We’ll savour the last few days in Rome before heading back to our quiet Canadian outdoor lifestyle in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island …population 63,000 (750,000 on all of Vancouver Island)!

According to USA Today, Italy is #2 of The Top 10 European countries to visit in 2014 .
I can see why.

Italy has beautiful varied landscapes and cities that are rich in culture and history.  In my opinion Italians are wonderful, warm welcoming people who are passionate about life, family and friends.  We’ll definitely be back…                                     HOME
